SaaS: Realities vs Fantasies

Unpopular opinion: Today’s software services (SaaS) are like one-trick ponies (but hey, at least they’re good at that one trick!). Sure, you could join the startup race, but unless you’re early and willing to live on coffee and dreams, it’s a tough gig.🥲

A Different Path

Hot take: Maybe you don’t need to be a tech hotshot at all. Hear me out - there are other ways to thrive in the tech world without founding the next unicorn startup.

Embracing the Generalist Approach

I think we’re heading for a world where everyone’s a bit of a coder (even if it’s low-code). Imagine a future where tech skills are as common as knowing how to use a smartphone.

  • A local bakery owner building their own online ordering system
  • A freelance writer creating an AI-writing tool using APIs to help with their writing
  • A boutique consultancy developing custom analytics dashboards, also from APIs
  • And the local gym owner is debating with you that Nextjs is better than Astro (boo!)

And folks like me? We’ll be there to help others navigate this tech-saturated world (yes, this is a sneaky sales pitch! But if it’s not me, it’s ‘them’).

The Power of Adaptability

If my 11-year-old daughter’s any indication, the next couple of decades are gonna be a blast. The key? Adaptability. You don’t need to create the next big SaaS to be successful. Instead, focus on developing a broad understanding of various technologies. Be the person who can connect the dots and innovate across different areas.

We’ll handle the everyday tech magic, leaving the really hard stuff to specialists or scientists (not the “data” version).🤭

The Naysayers and the Future

I know some tech purists might be raising their eyebrows right now. But hey, if this seems far-fetched, we’ll probably both be too old to care when it happens anyway. Kinda funny, and sad at the same time. Still exciting though! 😅

What’s Next?

Speaking of exciting, my daughter and I are diving into our summer game-dev camp. Time to level up our skills with Godot Engine! It’s not about creating the next Minecraft, but about learning, adapting, and having fun with tech.

Anyway, you can roast me on X if you want!

The link should be around here… did you see where I put it?🙃
